Orchid Playground

This inclusive playground was made possible by the Let’s Play Community Construction Grant from Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and national non-profit, KaBOOM!.

The Orchid Avenue Inclusive Playground is for children (ages 5-12) that offers wheelchair accessibility and is located by the North Parking Lot at the Main Library.

This inclusive playground enhances playability in the City of McAllen, beautifies the area, and offers more space for children and families to enjoy the outdoors.

The wheelchair-accessible playground, which was assembled with the generous help of volunteers from Keep McAllen Beautiful, the National Hispanic Professionals Organization, and UT-RGV, is designed to offer children sensory-rich experiences through play components, activity panels, a ramping system, and slides. The structure is meant to invite children of all abilities to be active, learn through play, create memories, and form friendships.

In 2024, the Orchid Avenue Playground got an upgrade! Just in time for the hot weather, new elements include a shade cover, fencing, and accessible picnic tables. Our Library Advisory Board President, Dr. Joseph Ryan, says, “We invite families to bring their children to enjoy the playground. The new shade cover will help make this area a year-round place for family enjoyment.” These new elements create a wonderful environment for families to have fun and spend more time at the Library.

Tiny Forest

This new space was made possible through the generous support of H-E-B Helping Here and the Friends of Quinta Mazatlán, whose sponsorships helped bring this vision to life for our community.

In March 2025, we unveiled our Tiny Forest at Orchid Park. This project, in partnership with Quinta Mazatlán, brings native plants and green spaces to our community, creating a new outdoor learning environment at Main Library.

Tiny Forests are small, very densely planted patches designed to replicate a much larger forest. Over time the Tiny Forest will support birds & butterflies, provide cool and clean air, beautify the area with trees and provide an outdoor classroom for children.
